Part 1: Most Amazing Black Health and Fitness Influencers to Follow on Social Media

Let’s just state this first and foremost: why do I post so much about Black Lives Matter and the societal and systemic racism in this country? I’m no social justice rights activist and I am most certainly not Black. I’ve been seeing the numbers on my Instagram–they’ve been dropping quite a bit. Granted, this could be due to reasons not related to Black Lives Matter and I do not blame the movement for prompting people to unfollow me. In fact, if these individuals don’t feel comfortable with me being so “political” or outspoken about this, then they by all means do not have to stay. Anyhow, the reason why I’ve been posting about BLM, white supremacy, systemic racism, colorism, the anatomy of prejudice, bigotry, and racism, and police brutality, is because it is my personal form of education. Reposting a photo on social media or reading an article and discussing it online helps me learn more about the movement. Second of all, you do not have to be Black or a certified activist to care about a cause. I want to help amplify the Black voices that have been muted and halted for generations. It is not my job to speak for the movement itself, but it is my job to garner more awareness and knowledge about how to become more informed and a more active ally. I plan on elaborating on being active in social justice and intersectionality as a vegan in another post, but let’s continue with celebrating phenomenal Black social media platforms in the health and fitness community!

This list is structured in no particular order. I’ve compiled a few Black health and fitness influencers I have been loving lately, but this is not even close to a complete myriad of accounts (though this isn’t to say that diversity is lacking in the fitness community, because compared to the saturation of its amalgamation of influencers and how many participants there are, the demographics are still very much white-domineering). There are much more to follow, big and small. Here are just some I follow on YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, and/or personal blogs that I genuinely want more people to know about.

Lastly, there will 100% be a Part 2 to this. I have been on a MASSIVE YouTube kick with more videos from Black vegan channels and Black health and fitness channels! Best believe that I will showcase another array of fabulous accounts and platforms to follow next week!

BRITTNEBABE: when it comes to Brittne, it was inspiration, awe, and ultimate motivation at first sight. This gorgeous woman exudes an extraordinary amount of strength and positivity! If I could, I’d just publish ALL her posts below because they are all phenomenal! What is super cool about Brittne’s approach to fitness is her centralization on at-home workouts–hell, her athleticism is even HIGHER than those who attend the gym daily, which is nuts considering how many people assume you need the gym to achieve a crazy level of fitness! Recently, she lost her mother Dominique to breast cancer, which is absolutely devastating and all her tributes to Dominique are incredibly heartwarming.

GABRIEL SEY: I do not follow very many male fitness influencers because I’ve found that a lot of them depict very obnoxious “bro science” or “toxic masculinity” douchey energy. On the other hand, Gabriel Sey is one of the most informative and down-to-earth individuals I’ve seen out there! He is amazing for fathers who want to maintain a solid workout routine and healthy diet for strength and longevity. My favorite videos from his channel entail more informative chats of fitness for elevated quality of life and promotion of healthier habits that are mixed with some clips of his fitness routine (although, his 10,000 calorie challenge is one of my guilty pleasures because he is HILARIOUS in it!)! Moreover, he is also a dad of two children, a husband of a fabulously fit woman, and just an all-around wonderful person to watch.

RACHELALEXANDRAFIT: Rachel Alexandra never fails to make me feel a little better with every post of hers I see! She has one of the kindest and brightest smiles, but on top of that, her workout demonstrations are very easy to follow and focused on building strength, feeling physically energized, and mentally fulfilled but motivated to set new goals. I also love her YouTube videos for a closer glimpse of her personality, which is equally positive and uplifting like her Instagram posts, if not more! Finally, she has been very outspoken about promoting education on Black Lives Matter and discouraging racial discrimination against Black people, which is an even more stellar way of using her platform!

LIBBY CHRISTENSEN: If you gravitate towards chill but vibrant energy, colorful fitness attire hauls (which, I won’t be promoting because, in utmost transparency, I don’t really watch them or care to do so), and fun fitness and lifestyle videos, Libby’s channel is just for you! It is wonderful to see someone balancing an online college program with health and fitness because there are so many other young fitness influencers trying to work on social media or health/fitness coaching full-time (nothing wrong with that, though!). I absolutely adore watching her lifestyle YouTube videos because they exhibit such positive energy, but I also LOVE her workout posts on Instagram! She appears to be more active on Instagram–her story about her and her twin being adopted by white parents is very compelling and one you shouldn’t miss for SURE.

MASSY ARIAS: Talk about warrior goddess vibes that GLOW! Massy displays such a powerful form of physical fitness that comes with an even more electrifyingly gripping backstory: Massy came to America from the Dominican Republic at age 14 without speaking English, mandating her to work for herself to get by, and hitting rock bottom mentally and in her personal life with the loss of her brother, but learned how to utilize fitness to actively teach a new meaning of health. Her workout videos are extremely invigorating, but not in a way for you to look a certain way–instead, they initiate you want to become stronger and more physically athletic, which is even more empowering!

ASHLEY QUE: What is just as, if not more, interesting than someone who has achieved their “goal” weight? A person documenting their experience and journey to reach their ambitions. This is why I started watching the videos of Ashley Que, but I have been staying because she keeps it real, has such a lively personality, and appears to have such a practical but mentally balanced and healthy relationship with food, fitness, and body image! She doesn’t pretend to be fully satisfied with her weight and recognizes. that it is capable of being improved upon and it is spectacular to see her progress closer to her weight loss endeavors. Ashley just seems like an all-around beautiful woman, inside and out, plus a phenomenal person to hand out with!

ZENKELLEY_FIT: Zene is such a go-getter and truly emanates the importance of goal-setting, spreading love, and working hard to feel attractive and strong in your own body! If you check out her saved IG stories, you will see that everything about her is so well-rounded, including her interests, diet (her tofu stir-fries make me salivate!), day-to-day life, travels, workouts (which always motivate me to move in some way), and internal thoughts as well, which is what makes her magnificent to keep up with. Of course, there is no shortage of BLM content and true authenticity on educating yourself but taking care of your mental well-being!

COURTNEY SARRACINO: Oh, em, gee, talk about someone with such a cheerful and friendly personality! I cannot get enough of Courtney’s videos because they are incredibly authentic and have feel-good vibes overall. Her content would make anyone smile–seriously. She never hesitates to speak her mind and share her true thoughts on anything, including Black Lives Matter and her experience as a half-Black and half-Native American woman. Moreover, what I love about her is how her delivery of any information is given with love, encouragement, and invigoration that does not denigrate anyone. or personally target anyone to feel insecure or ashamed about themselves!

NISHHA_CURVES: Someone who not only encourages their followers to love themselves for how they are now, but to strive towards more self-improvement in fitness, is such a phenomenal catalyst of what health and fitness SHOULD be about. Nishha executes such a brilliant energy and message for Black women and all kinds of people, especially with her fun workut videos and her discussion about body positivity with scars and other personal insecurities. She demonstrates that in the face of adversity (such as her childhood car crash that necessitated a colostomy), you can learn to physically and mentally transform yourself in a positive way. Additionally, she always articulates that there is never a reason to stop pursuing your dreams!

Happy Thursday IG Fam . . I hope everyone is safe, well and active. Tell me if itโ€™s just me but I really feel like the weeks have been flying by super fast since this quarantine thing has went down I mean weโ€™re almost half way through the year . I mean I am not complaining or anything , itโ€™s just this is the time to take advantage of silent , yet not that many of us are doing that right now ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿฝโ€โ™€๏ธ so my advice to the slackers is *do not complain on vacation when youโ€™re still in the โ€œI need to lose fat stageโ€* this was the lose fat stage and you just wasted your time smh ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿฝโ€โ™€๏ธ . . . For those Who truly understand that your goals and aspirations do not stop because the world is being asked to stay steel for those who are willing to do whatever it takes to get to their goals -LETS GET IT DONE โœ… . . . So today I wanted to share with you guys a few band resistant workouts. I did my best to incorporate upper body and lower body and then the midsection. CHANEL COCO BROWN: A beauty inside and out, Chanel Coco Brown has some of the most visually stunning travel videos and well-filmed and edited workout demonstrations as well! Her content on glute development and growth as well as nutrition and workout efficiency are very informative and straightforward, but this goes for her IG story reposts of BLM and videos on beauty! Furthermore, her and Simeon display some of the best partner workouts that legitimately make me want to workout with my boyfriend (or a member of GOT7…either will do)!

AJAHZIFIT: BLASIAN LIVES MATTER…and Ajahzi is not afraid to voice her passion for Black Lives Matter (please watch “let’s chat all things black” below) and her experience growing up mixed where most people would not know she is half Vietnamese, but would not necessarily be fully accepted in the Black community for her mixed ethnicity. Obviously, her fitness and wellness content is incredibly perfect for a relaxing day where you want some inspiration for working out, cooking nourishing meals, and taking care of yourself all around. Her travel videos are some of my favorites as well because they look INSANELY fun and magnificent! Ajahzi seems like such a genuine and beautiful person overall, so definitely check out her videos and her Instagram!

DANYELE WILSON: With such a kind heart, lovely smile, and insanely marvelous level of athleticism, Danyele is one of the most aspirational Black fitness influencers to follow, but not in such a way that makes you feel insecure or icky about going on social media. Even though she has a bangin’ fantastic Instagram, her YouTube videos are absolutely awesome too! Danyele constantly highlights how fitness needs to be utilized for personal growth and improving in strength to feel proud of yourself beyond an exterior (which you have to love that she preaches healthy-looking bodies over skinny ones!).

NEKISHA TANEIL: Interested in more than plenty of at-home and gym workouts, cute bikinis, and captions that keep you inspired to continue setting goals? If so, you HAVE to follow Nekisha! She seems super positive and authentic, plus her Instagram has some magnificent exercise videos that are feasible to complete both at home and at a gym (many are no equipment), plus she always encourages others to make healthier lifestyle choices and find new ambitions to pursue. One of my favorite aspects about Nekisha’s platform is her food IG stories folder because of all the vegan-friendly and plant-based meals she features–they look absolutely incredible and delicious!

ALITTLETAESTE: Into fitness, studying at Stanford, majoring in premedical studies, AND bubbly and vibrant at the same time? It is possible to have it all, and Tae completely emulates that! It is a breath of fresh air to see a college student with a rigorous schedule and program balance a healthy lifestyle at the same time–her vlogs are super entertaining! Her Instagram also includes plenty of workout videos that anyone can integrate into their agendas. What makes Tae even more incredible is her backstory with pursuing an MD, specifically having battled leukemia since age nine and now on the way to become a doctor to save others’ lives!

TONI MITCHELL: In my Black vegans roundup, I included Toni Mitchell’s YouTube channel as one of the best online (at least in my personal opinion) because of the mix of healthy vegan food videos and workouts. However, her Instagram is equally fabulous because there is an abundance of high-quality workout videos to try, beautifully photographed posts, health and fitness advice, and motivational captions to prompt anyone to make healthier choices! One of my favorite aspects about Toni is how she keeps it real–the Quarantine 15 can impact anybody (but it is a temporary phase, so no sweat), there is always room for improvement, and external peace starts with finding peace within in light of recent events, specifically centered around oppression of Black people.

My physique at the beginning of stay home orders(left side) vs. my physique now( right side). Youโ€™re not alone if you fell prey to QUARANTINE 15. I gained a bit of body fat myself throughout this time. The good thing is weight gain is not permanent, it can be changed through proper dieting and exercise. Realistically my physique changes, sometimes Iโ€™m thicker and at other times leaner depending upon my eating habits. Even when I know thereโ€™s room for growth I still love my body for what it is. . . The biggest change is in my chest area( my breasts ๐Ÿ™‚). Iโ€™m wearing a non-padded bra/ top in both. I know some of you are interested in how I reduce my breast size naturally and the key to it all is eating healthy wholesome foods. Refined sugars combined with a high fat diet can cause all kinds of downfalls. Before quarantine I was consistently training and eating well; my diet consists of plant- based wholesome meals/ foods and I monitored my macros and calories. During the stay home orders I got really relaxed on my eating and training. Anytime I gain weight( eat in surplus calories &/or eat poorly) I notice a difference in my breasts, face, stomach, and sometimes a change in my menstrual cycle. . . . Poor dieting can cause hormone fluctuations and Mastalgia( breast pain near or during a menstrual cycle) which can cause excess fluid and/ or fat in breasts. I am also naturally top heavy genetically( large breasts run in my family) which plays apart. However, having and maintaining a natural breast reduction is very possible and can be sustainable. My biggest advice is to analyze your relationship with food. You canโ€™t out train a poor diet( #vegan or not), but it is also okay to have moderate cheat days. Keep in mind that what you seek physically starts mentally. ๐Ÿ’š

FITMENCOOK: Since the early 2010s, Kevin Curry has been one of my number one favorite platforms for the healthiest, most vibrant, and tastiest-looking recipes! The first recipe of his I tried was his egg-stuffed sweet potato (back then, it was a 10/10 from me!). His channel and blog provide HEAPS of nourishing, low-carb friendly, gluten free, and many more vegan recipes that anyone can fit into their macros at any time. Most importantly, Kevin himself seems incredibly sweet, genuine, and passionate about what he does, as well as aiding others to optimize their health–just look at his parents’ weight loss journey through veganism!

FANCY85FIT_: Being an active duty soldier and NASM coach, Frantzcesca truly embodies positivity in every progressive step of your journey, work for strength and self-care, and living without any limits. Her Instagram provides a plethora of exercise videos that integrate all types of training in one, such as strength, cardio, endurance, resistance, and much more, along with plenty of progress photos from her own fitness journey and practical wellness tips. What makes Frantzcesca even more incredible is how she promotes lifestyle changes, never quick fixes. She exudes the outcomes of long-term planning and action–obviously, you can’t deny that she looks gorgeous, strong, AND she definitely exemplifies so in her workouts!

VYNNESSA ALEASE: Like me, if you are a HIIT fanatic, then Vynnessa Alease is your new go-to! I love her YouTube channel and her Instagram since they display a vast array of workout videos to save that are guaranteed to get your heart pumping and your endorphins chugging away! Vynnessa’s approach to working out and eating healthily is very practicable and realistic, which makes her platform even more refreshing from all the crazy obsessions with aesthetics out there. Furthermore, she never hesitates to discuss her own experiences being a Black fitness content creator and growing up as someone whom society once did not deem as beautiful (which…WTF, she totally is). It truly is a breath of fresh air to watch her YouTube videos or check out her Instagram because Vynnessa signifies how one can transform any aspects of negativity into a flourishing life and career!

JADE PACKER: A lot of people like watching fitness competitors rock on stage and become progressively more shredded–it’s super challenging, and sadly, a lot of individuals do not perform the methods correctly and end up wreaking havoc on their metabolic health. Jade Pecker is one of the best demonstrators of healthy and sustainable competing while radiating how crucial it is to channel in the hard work and focus on the why, but not focusing on where you place or whether you win the competition or not. Most importantly, she truly emanates the importance of mental and emotional resilience: being mixed provides privileges and setbacks, being competition lean isn’t everything, and trying your absolute hardest is the best reward!

THEQII_TOFITNESS: QiQi is SUCH a ray of sunshine inside and out! When you watch her videos, it feels just like you are watching your best friend–or someone who you WANT to be friends with! Her channel offers a vast array of try-on hauls, follow-along workouts, fun vlogs, full day of eating videos, and authentic chit-chats sprinkled along in each video. What makes QiQi truly marvelous and stunning inside and out is how confident she is about her strength and straightforward about being Black and actively aiding in the Black Lives Matter movement as it continues on. She is absolutely glowing with motivational energy that just makes you want to go out and move, then give yourself a compliment!

ALIZร‰ DEN’YAE: Are you a sucker for cute athleisure that match colors, effective but straightforward workouts on Instagram, and for someone who is extremely interactive with their followers? If so, Alizรฉ’s Instagram is just the one to follow! Her exercise videos have all kinds of variations in intensity, types of movement, and targeted body parts, so you won’t ever find any shortage of exciting workouts! In particular, I absolutely adore how colorfully vibrant her attire is, how she responds to as many comments and messages from her followers as she can, and her foodie IG story folder (I mean, those vegan donuts…can’t get enough!)! Moreover, there is so much positivity and activism on her platform in regards to Black Lives Matter and self-love with Gymshark campaigns!

FITBYTAT: Tatiana’s Instagram is one of my favorites because there is no shortage of delectable-looking vegan food, reminders for self-love, and documentation of her own fitness endeavors (including progress photos and workout videos!), which makes her incredibly relatable and refreshing! Her photos showcasing her completions of her workouts as well as her comparisons of posed vs. unposed selfies are even more authentic and down-to-earth because the comparison game on social media is REAL. Tatiana is such a shining light for both self-care and for bringing awareness to discrimination and racism towards the Black community, so again, highly suggest you check out her Instagram!

CHANEL DELISSER: Nothing is more invigorating, mesmerizing, and thrilling than seeing someone KILLING it in athletic performance and encouraging others to follow along. Chanel is one of the most positive and aspirational catalysts for fitness and wellness because she prides in using it as a way to celebrate the body, not attempt to constantly change it. Being an occupational therapist, she knows what she’s discussing when it comes to taking care of yourself and prioritizing your health. I absolutely adore how she stresses that one can be their own inspiration and goals by making daily and realistic changes!

VICTORIA.INSPIRE: With Victoria’s goal-oriented personality, vibrant and welcoming aura, and her follow-along workouts that always feature stunning gym wear, it is no wonder that “inspire” is included in her IG handle name because she absolutely is an inspiration! A certified personal trainer, nutritionist, and sports psychology student, she has so much to offer–some of the best content she publishes (though all of it is fantastic!) are her corrective form demonstrations, her posts on Black Lives Matter, and her exercise videos. Victoria is very transparent and eloquent in her words, as well as empowering and collaborative with all kinds of other Black fitness voices–can’t get any better than that!

SCOLA DONDO: Full transparency–I discovered Scola Dondo early, early on in my fitness journey. I adored watching her videos and keeping up with her social media! Once my interests shifted, I stopped watching certain channels, including hers, BUT I had to revisit around this time because her energy is that infectious. She has only aged even more gracefully than ever! As a personal trainer and TV presenter, Scola can light up ANY room with her incredible dancing skills and vivacious energy! Moreover, she has shared quite a lot about her personal experience with hypothyroidism and demonstrates that a fitness journey takes patience and consistency, as well as celebration of the human body for what it can provide.
