Have you ever met those people who just don’t seem to treat you…..say, the right way? I don’t know if you know what I mean, but I’m talking about those people who don’t say hi to you unless you say hi to them, those people who don’t try to sympathize when you’re openly upset about something, or those people who you’re so friendly with that they actually don’t like it. Yeah. I know that these kinds of people don’t like me, and if they’re in your life, they probably don’t like you. Thing is, they don’t want to admit it directly so they give you the cold shoulder.
You have no idea how many times I’ve dealt with these kinds of people. I dealt with them in my first musical theater summer program, at summer camps, in middle school, in other theater programs, in everyday life, and right now, for a matter of fact. They picked me last, still made fun of my appearance, declined my requests to be a part of their group or a show they were doing and basically did whatever they could to indirectly message me that they didn’t want me around. AND, I DESPISE that I felt the need to please them no matter how many times they reject(ed) me. Looking back I wish I could just slap some sense in myself because I was so dumb. But the truth of a matter is, I didn’t love myself enough to know that I wasn’t worth their time and that they weren’t worth mine. It wasn’t until I became healthier and more independent when I started to treat them the way they deserved to be treated.
Keeping this in mind, how do I deal with these people? Well, I don’t. I work on myself first, because the truth of a matter is, I am the only one who will be around for my entire life all the time. I won’t see my classmates, my teachers, my peers, or those rude teenagers loitering at the Commons my entire life. Even certain family members, but this applies when you’re a bit older and you live and work for yourself. Anyways, the more you try to be flexible towards people you know don’t like you, the more power you give them. Be successful and be happy in your own mind because they hate that. Just eliminate them from your environment–not necessary in a literal sense. Don’t talk to them, don’t stalk them on social media, don’t pry into their business. If they do reach out to you, just give them the bare minimum and go straight to the point.
People like this don’t deserve you. You don’t deserve them, either. Remember that you must only achieve the best for yourself and letting people like this will only hinder your progress. It is said that your haters would kill to see you fall. Don’t, and they’ll eventually die out of your life.
